After the Storm, Get a Clear Picture of the Damage
Storms in the mountains can turn fast. A line of thunderstorms can bring hail and strong gusts to one ridge and leave the next valley untouched. Hurricane Helene in late September 2024 showed how hard a storm can hit Western North Carolina, with wind, rain and fallen trees damaging homes across the region. Whether the storm was big or small, the first step is the same: find out exactly what happened to your roof.
Some storm damage is obvious, like a tree limb on the roof or shingles scattered across the yard. A lot of it is not. Wind can break the seal on shingles without tearing them off, leaving them loose for the next storm to finish. Hail can bruise shingles and knock off granules in spots you cannot see from the ground, and it can dent vents, gutters and metal trim. We check the whole roof so nothing is missed.
We document the damage thoroughly with photos and notes, and we can share that documentation with your insurance company. Your insurer makes its own decisions about coverage, but clear records of what the storm did give you something concrete to work from. Then we repair or restore the roof with materials that suit your home, whether it is shingle or metal, and give you a written estimate before any work starts.
Storm Damage We Inspect and Repair

Wind Damage
Strong gusts lift shingle edges, crease them and break the seal strip that holds them down. We look for loose, creased and missing shingles and repair the affected areas.

Hail Damage
Hail can leave dark bruises where granules are knocked away and can dent vents, flashing and gutters. We check each slope closely, since hail damage is easy to miss.

Fallen Trees and Limbs
A falling limb can puncture the deck or crack the framing below. Once the tree is cleared, we assess the structure beneath and rebuild the damaged section of roof.

Storm Damage Documentation
We photograph and write up what we find on each part of the roof, and we can share that record with your insurance company if you choose.

Metal Roof Storm Repair
Metal panels can be dented, bent or pulled loose at the edges in high wind. We repair or replace damaged panels and trim, which we form on our own machine.

Storm Damage Questions
How can I tell if hail damaged my roof?
From the ground, look for dents in gutters, downspouts, vents and any metal around the house, and for granules washed out at the bottom of the downspouts. Damage on the shingles themselves is hard to see without getting up close, where it shows as dark spots or soft bruises. A careful inspection is the only reliable way to know.
Is it safe to go up on my roof after a storm?
We recommend staying off it. Wet shingles are slippery, damaged areas may not hold weight and fallen limbs can shift without warning. Look from the ground, take photos of anything you can see from a window or the yard, and leave the climbing to us.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?
That is your decision, and your policy may have its own guidance. Some homeowners like to know what the damage looks like before they decide whether to file. We can inspect the roof, document what we find and share that documentation with your insurance company if you choose to involve them.
Will you tell me if there is no real damage?
Yes. Not every storm damages every roof, and we will not invent problems that are not there. If your roof came through in good shape, we will tell you that plainly and point out anything worth keeping an eye on in the future.
My roof is not leaking. Can storm damage still matter?
It can. Wind can unseal shingles that still look flat, and hail bruises can weaken shingles so they wear out sooner. These problems may not leak today, but they can give way in the next storm. Having the roof checked while the damage is fresh gives you an accurate record of what happened.
What can I do right away to limit the damage?
If water is coming in, protect your belongings and catch the drips. Take dated photos of any damage you can see, inside and out, because they help show when it happened. Stay away from anything that requires a ladder or the roof, then call us to set up an inspection.
